Romantic Gazebo
(see photo in more views)
This irresistibly charming gazebo features lacy latticework arches and railings and a steep-pitched cedar roof. It's built on a concrete slab beside a flower garden and provides a shaded, tranquil place to read, relax, or dine.
Measuring nearly 10 feet across, this octagonal structure can easily accommodate a large table and four chairs, yet it's compact enough to fit into even a modest-size yard. Note that this gazebo features a traditional open-air design, but it could easily be screened in for insect-free nighttime use.
Design: Gazebo Nostalgia
Design Details
The eight gazebo 'walls' are framed with 4-by-4 posts; horizontal 2-by-6 rails frame the base. The lattice archways are trimmed at the top with 2 by 2s and along the bottom edges with 1 by 6s and 3/8-inch-thick redwood benderboard. Prefabricated lattice panels fill in between the framing members.
Each of the eight 4-by-4 posts supports a 2-by-6 roof rafter that's made up of two parts. The main rafter extends at a 45-degree angle from the center hub at the roof peak down to a post. A 2-by-6 rafter tail is attached to the rafter at a 15-degree angle. The two parts are joined together with half-lap joints and machine bolts.
